Sweet and Sour Meatballs

  • 1 lb Braveheart Black Angus beef

  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs

  • 1/4 cup milk

  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion

  • 1 clove garlic, minced

  • 1 egg

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

For the sweet and sour sauce:

  • 1/2 cup ketchup

  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar

  • 1/4 cup white vinegar

  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce

  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch

  • 1/4 cup pineapple juice (reserved from canned pineapple chunks)

  • 1/4 cup water

  • 1 cup pineapple chunks

  • 1 bell pepper, diced

  • Optional garnish: sliced green onions or sesame seeds


  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).

  2. Combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, chopped onion, minced garlic, egg, salt, and pepper in a large bowl. Mix well until all ingredients are evenly incorporated.

  3. Shape the mixture into small meatballs about 1 inch in diameter. Place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

  4. Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the meatballs and cook until browned on all sides, about 5 minutes. You may need to do this in batches to avoid overcrowding the skillet.

  5. While the meatballs are browning, prepare the sweet and sour sauce. Whisk together the ketchup, brown sugar, white vinegar, soy sauce, cornstarch, pineapple juice, and water in a medium saucepan until smooth.

  6. Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a simmer, stirring constantly. Continue to cook for 2-3 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly.

  7. Add the pineapple chunks and diced bell pepper to the sauce and stir to combine.

  8. Pour the sweet and sour sauce over the browned meatballs on the baking sheet.

  9. Transfer the baking sheet to the preheated oven and bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the meatballs are cooked through, and the sauce is bubbly.

  10. Remove from the oven and let the meatballs rest for a few minutes. Serve the sweet and sour meatballs over cooked rice or noodles.

  11. Garnish with sliced green onions or sesame seeds if desired, and enjoy!
