Keto Steak Marinade

Diets are difficult to stick to for a variety of reasons. Even if someone dedicates themselves to their new lifestyle, finding foods that stick to a specific kind of diet is often a hard task. One diet that requires a strict adherence to its rules is the keto diet.

There are many delicious foods one can still eat on a keto diet. However, regular steak marinade is not on that list. If you want to enhance the flavor of your steaks with a marinade, you’re not out of luck just yet. This article will go into how you can prepare a keto friendly steak marinade that’ll keep your diet intact and your tastebuds overjoyed!

What is Keto?

The keto diet is basically a diet where you get your calories from proteins and fats as opposed to carbohydrates. Traditionally, you consume less than 50 grams of carbs per day on a diet like this. While there are more steps involved, the important part of keto for us right now is the fact that it frowns upon highly processed foods.

This means that, while there are many foods that are technically keto friendly, it’s ultimately better to avoid them while on the diet. Unfortunately for harcore steak lovers, this includes most store bought marinades. Along with containing loads of sugars, which aren’t keto friendly, a common ingredient in both store bought and homemade marinades is soy sauce.

Soy sauce falls into the category of being technically keto friendly, but not being the best option available. No need to worry, though, because there are other ways to prepare a delicious steak marinade and still stay keto compliant.

Keto Steak Marinade Recipe

The recipe for a keto steak marinade will be incredibly similar to a normal one. The biggest difference here is that we’re substituting a couple of problem ingredients for ones that are in line with a keto diet.

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup avocado oil

  • ⅓ cup coconut aminos

  • ¼ cup fresh lemon juice

  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic

  • 1 teaspoon dried rosemary

  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano

  • 1 teaspoon sea salt

  • 1 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper

  • ½ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes

Instructions:

  1. Combine ingredients in a container (medium bowl, jar, or ziplock bag)

  2. Mix ingredients together well by whisking them if in a bowl, or shaking them while sealed in a jar or ziplock bag

  3. Add your steak to the marinade

  4. Marinate for at least 2 hours in a refrigerator (max 5 hours for best taste)

  5. Remove steak from marinade, cook, and enjoy!

Common Steak Marinade Questions

How Long Should I Marinate My Steak?

Many cooks are happy to let a steak marinate for half an hour, and others don’t settle for anything less than a full day. Some chefs even wait the maximum five days before removing their steak from the marinade.

On average, you should marinate your steak for no less than 30 minutes and no more than 24 hours.

What Happens if My Steak Marinates For Too Long?

Marinating a steak is meant to tenderize it and add flavor. Not doing it long enough won’t result in any added flavor, but doing it too long can ruin the texture of the meat. If you’ve allowed your steak to marinate for more than five days, it shouldn’t be eaten.

Can I Use My Marinade Again?

Portions of marinade are only good for one use. If a marinade has been used with raw meat, that means it’s already been contaminated with bacteria, and it will contaminate any other food you place into it.
