The crispy and fluffy fry bread is a perfect vessel for the flavorful beef filling and a variety of toppings, resulting in a mouthwatering combination of Indian and Mexican cuisine.

Ingredients

For the Beef Filling:

  • 1 pound Braveheart Black Angus burger meat

  • 1 small onion, diced

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin

  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander

  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika

  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder (adjust to taste)

  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the Indian Fry Bread:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 tablespoon baking powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1 cup warm water

  • Vegetable oil for frying

For the Toppings:

  • Shredded lettuce

  • Diced tomatoes

  • Chopped cilantro

  • Sour cream

  • Shredded cheddar cheese

  • Salsa or hot sauce (optional)

Instructions

  1. Combine the flour, baking powder, and salt in a mixing bowl for the Indian fry bread. Gradually add the warm water while stirring until a soft dough forms. Knead the dough briefly until it comes together. Cover the dough with a clean kitchen towel and rest for 15 minutes.

  2. In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the diced onion, minced garlic, and sauté until translucent and fragrant.

  3. Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook until browned and cooked, breaking it up with a spoon. Drain any excess grease.

  4. Stir in the ground cumin, coriander, paprika, chili powder, salt, and pepper into the cooked ground beef mixture. Adjust the seasonings to suit your taste. Cook for 2-3 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together. Remove from heat and set aside.

  5. Divide the rested dough into small balls. Roll each ball into a thin, circular shape on a lightly floured surface, approximately 6-8 inches in diameter.

  6. In a deep, heavy-bottomed pot or large skillet, heat vegetable oil for frying to around 350°F (175°C). Carefully place the rolled-out dough into the hot oil, one at a time, and fry until golden brown and puffed up, about 2-3 minutes per side. Use tongs or a slotted spoon to remove the fry bread from the oil and place it on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Repeat the process with the remaining dough.

  7. To assemble the Indian Fry Bread Beef Tacos, spoon the beef filling onto each fry bread. Top with shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, chopped cilantro, sour cream, shredded cheddar cheese, and salsa or hot sauce if desired.

  8. Serve the Indian Fry Bread Beef Tacos immediately and enjoy the delicious fusion of flavors and textures.
